SARAH TOMBS

Sarah Tombs was born in Bishop’s Stortford in 1961. She studied at Wimbledon School of Art (1980-83) Chelsea School of Art (1983-4) and The Royal College of Art (1985-7).

Whilst still a student she became involved in one of the National Garden Festivals in Stoke on Trent, working as an artist in residence at the steel works. From this experience she decided to concentrate on Public Art, believing that artwork should be seen in public spaces and not just galleries. In 1987 she set up her studio, a railway arch in Brixton working on commissions.
Her first solo exhibition was held at Christopher Hull Gallery in London, since then she has exhibited in various galleries in Britain.
Her work has also been included in many group exhibitions since 1982, mostly in Britain but also in Europe.

Until recently her work concentrated on the traditional methods of constructing in steel and stone carving, enjoying exploring the differences between the two materials. Steel, a reflection of working in an urban, gritty environment .The excitement of its inherent tensile strength enables Sarah to make structures that appear to defy gravity and the process of construction allows for spontaneity creating a sense of movement.
Sarah began using stone when in residence for a year in a studio on the South Coast ‘ To achieve an organic simplicity in contrast to the construction of steel.’

This was made during a short period when Sarah was living and working on the South Coast of England. Anemone is an abstracted form reminiscent of a sea creature and plant form.

Breathing Space is based on the structure of the human lung. Made in steel, oxygen that breathes life into all animals will eventually destroy the piece and therein lies the paradox. Often wooded areas are described as the 'lungs of the city', hence this is sited in the heart of the wooded garden.
