PHILIP RICHARDSONStudied at St Albans School of Art Foundation Course, & Liverpool College of Art BA Hons (Fine Art).To develop landscape painting & explore light & colour lived for sixteen years in Italy working mostly near Siena, moved to Catalonia in 1996 to work from a completely different landscape. Started showing work in 1997. The abstract in Art has a purity that I have always loved. Since I was a student I have been trying to paint an abstract painting, however I have always worked from observation. At first I wanted to concentrate on developing my representational skills as I felt they were vital tools for what I wanted to do. More recently I find that to pursue my aim the world around me is the richest source of material. The physical presence of paint, and the relationships between colours and marks are the essential elements. All ideas are obtained by observation. Selection and the use of them are subjective decisions, though I strive for accuracy all the time. Only landscape and still life are my themes and sources. Portraiture introduces a human presence that changes the discipline - to include it is a move I would not wish to make. Lastly I find my imagination does not produce adequate material, eclectic observation is essential. The result of such an approach is of course a representational image, however it is the abstract aesthetic of the materials, colours, tones, & physical marks made by the brush & the interrelationship of all these that I would like those viewing my paintings to concentrate on. |
